Learn to Skate, CanSkate, Intro to STAR

Welcome!

We are thrilled to welcome our new and returning skaters to start a new season! Please read the important information below.

Equipment

Skaters attending our sessions will have more fun and advance faster if they are properly and safely equipped.

Ensure that:
  • Skates fit comfortably
  • There is room for toes to wiggle slightly
  • Heels do not lift inside the skate more than ¼ inch
  • An adult finger can fit in the top of the boot when done up
  • Excess laces are tucked or tied up so that they do not hang loose or drag on the ice

We suggest opting for 'lace-up' skates because they offer support, enable proper mobility, and can be adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit. The skate's boot should be sturdy and support both the foot and ankle.

Nametags

Skaters are required to wear a provided nametag throughout the session. The colour of the nametag indicates which group the skater is in. The nametags are clip-on and will be located at the concession stand near the entrance. Please return them at the end of the session so we can keep their group colours up-to-date.

Badges and Ribbons

In Learn to Skate, skaters will receive a ribbon once they have achieved all of the PreCanSkate skills.

In CanSkate, skaters work on skills in three categories: Agility, Balance, and Control. Skaters receive a ribbon when they have achieved all skills in a particular category. Each category has a progression of stages from 1 to 6. When a skater achieves all the skills within a particular level, they receive a badge for that level. For example, receiving Stage 1 Balance, Control, and Agility equals a Stage 1 badge.

Skaters will receive their certificates, ribbons, and badges the week following when it was earned. They may move into a different group after they have received a certificate or badge.

Report Cards

Skaters will receive two report cards at the halfway point and end of the year. These report cards will indicate how the skater is progressing on the skills in each category and level.
